    • Staffing shortages at First Transit have led to the cancellation of another school bus route in Yellowknife. According to First Transit, there is no extra space on other routes to accommodate affected families. Currently four routes have been cancelled due to a lack of drivers.

    • Housing NWT and the Town of Hay River are building 140 new homes over the next five years. The plan also includes 30 additional units for seniors.     • The Fort Smith Métis Daycare has opened on March 6. The daycare focuses on life skills and connects children to elders, culture and the community. Once the daycare hires more staff, the daycare can care for 28 children.

    • As Diavik Diamond Mine nears the end of commercial production in 2026, it is offering the Diavik My Path program to their employees and contractors. The program offers employees support on five paths as the 1,200 person workforce winds down and finishes reclamation. The mine employs over 1,100 employees, with 17% who are Northern Indigenous people.

    • The federal government and the GNWT announced $14 million in joint funding for the rehabilitation of the Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway. Funding will go to improvements that will increase road safety and reliability.     • The NWT government is increasing funding for most of its home repair programs. These programs now offer between $2,000-$5,000 more per eligible applicant. These changes will enable more residents to access adequate repair funding.     • Some Yellowknife schools have reissued their plea for bus drivers. A shortage of drivers has left three of the city’s 15 routes without service. Schools have struggled to find suitable part-time drivers as pay has remained low due to long-term contracts. The school district and the First Transit bus company have made hiring new drivers a priority.

    • Construction is underway on three new apartment buildings in Yellowknife. The first two buildings are scheduled to open in the fall of 2023, and construction for the third property will begin next spring.
