District of SecheltParks Gardener Competition No. 2024-30(Temporary, Full-Time) Nature of the PositionReporting to the Manager of Community Services and under the direction of the Parks Foreman, the Parks Gardener plans and organizes grounds maintenance projects for District parks, streetscapes and green spaces; directs labourers in grounds maintenance; and performs maintenance, arboriculture and landscaping duties. Essential CompetenciesApplicants must have Grade 12 (or equivalent); a one-year certificate in a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience; a minimum of three years? related experience in areas such as gardening and landscaping; and hold a valid Class 5 Drivers License. Applicants must have a professional, responsive and positive work attitude; interpersonal skills; the ability to work both independently and as a team member; and the ability to interact professionally with the public. Applicants must have the ability to competently and safely operate a variety of garden and power tools, tractors, mowers, watering equipment, and vehicles up to 1 ton in weight. Applicants must also have the ability to exert, sustain and repeat physical and mental actions necessary to complete tasks, and work under conditions requiring strength, endurance and focused attention in all types of weather. Preferred CompetenciesHorticulture and arboriculture knowledge and experience is preferred. Experience working in a municipal government environment would be considered an asset. Working ConditionsThis opportunity is a temporary backfill of a regular, full-time unionized position within the BCGEU and the end date will be based on the return of the incumbent on leave. Wage for the position is set at Grid Level 7, $31.90 - $35.44 per hour plus 9.8% of straight-time pay in lieu of scheduled vacations, paid holidays, health and welfare benefits and other paid leave. Hours of work are 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The District supports employment equity in accordance with the Human Rights Code of B.C.
