The Confederacy of Mainland Mi?kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing eight Mi?kmaq communities of mainland Nova Scotia. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi?kmaq communities? initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community. The CMM is located in the Millbrook Mi?kmaw Community in Nova Scotia and has over 150 Employees. The CMM?s Department of Health & Social Services is currently looking for an energetic, mature, and independent candidate to fill the role of *Diabetes Dietitian.*
*Position Overview*
Reporting to the Senior Director, Health and Social Services and the Wellness Programs Manager the Diabetes Dietitian is responsible for the Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative that is intended to support communities in developing culturally safe and appropriate care and treatment in diabetes management and prevention, health promotion programs, and lifestyle support. Address high rates of diabetes and complications and provide First Nations communities with support and opportunities to participate, design, and develop projects to address diabetes.
*Overview of Responsibilities:*
· Deliver a diabetes program that promotes awareness, prevention, and effective self-management of diabetes to community members of all ages.
· Build capacity, linkages, and networks for all components of the ADI (Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative) in Mi?kmaw communities.
· Coordinate with other community-based programming such as health center staff and schools in Mi?kmaw communities to deliver culturally appropriate educational sessions to meet the community diabetes program needs.
· Meet with relevant community stakeholders such as Health Directors, Health Centre staff, and other Community based workers to identify gaps in services and possible solutions.
· Work collaboratively with other Atlantic Region ADI consultants and the community health centers? staff (community health nurses, community health representatives, health directors, mental health workers, youth, and recreation coordinators, etc.)
· Work with other relevant organizations to implement community programs and services to address the activities outlined in the ADI Community work plan.
· Develop annual ADI community work plan and fiscal work plan.
· Continually seek education and training to remain culturally responsible and sensitive to needs of client(s)
*Position Requirements:*
· Minimum of an undergraduate degree in dietetics or nutrition and the completion of a Dietetic Internship
· Registered with the Nova Scotia Dietetic Association
· Certified Diabetes Educator designation by the Diabetes Canada (or eligible to write)
· Experience working with First Nation / Indigenous communities, First Nation service delivery organizations, and applicable government programming etc.
· Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
· Experience with a client, family, and community-centred approach
· Experience working with First Nation / Indigenous communities, First Nation service delivery organizations, and applicable government programming etc.
· Understanding of Mi?kmaw and Indigenous culture, communities, and organizations
· Knowledge of CMM member communities
· Working knowledge of First Nation Communities, First Nation service delivery organizations, and applicable government programming etc.
· Knowledge of available provincial health services and an understanding of First Nations Inuit Health of Indigenous Services and related programs and responsibilities
· Knowledge and working experience with the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action
· Understanding of the ongoing impact that Residential Schools have on survivors, descendants of survivors and communities.
· Knowledge and understanding of Mi?kmaw health disparities and the impacts of the social determinants of health.
